5fun & challenging gameSep 26, 2010
By P. Yocum
I'm more of a word-game person myself (Scrabble and Bananagrams are among my favorites), but Sumoku is so much fun! I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try a math/number game since my brain is a little rusty in those sectors. There are a few variations described on the instruction sheet--so far I've just played the regular multi-player version. Variations include solo sumoku, speed sumoku, team sumoku, and spot sumoku. All have basically the same point, which is to construct or find combinations of numbers that add up to multiples of the "key number" (there is a die included which is used to determine the key number). Each tile has a number (1-9) and one of 6 different colors. Colors can only be used once per row/column, but numbers may appear multiple times in the same row/column. For the multi-player version, players get points for the sum of the rows/columns they construct. Once all the tiles are used up, the player with the most points wins.

Game-play is very simple and easy to understand once you've read the directions. The game itself, however, is more challenging than you might expect. "Combining numbers to create multiples of 4? NO PROBLEM!" Right? Ehhhh...not really. Especially once the game gets going, and multiple positions open up for different combinations (which ultimately determine your points!). The each-color-only-once-per-row-or-column rule also makes things interesting as the game progresses.

The packaging is well-designed and practical. The cone-shape works well because the bag stands on its own, making it very easy to draw new tiles out of the bag. It zips securely so you don't have to worry about tiles spilling all over the place, and the material it's made of is sturdy so it should hold up over the years!

I highly recommend Sumoku to anyone looking for a fun, challenging game. As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I tend to be a word-game type of person. I tried Sudoku once and it totally lost my interest within a few minutes. Sumoku, however, is a number game I can enjoy.

(*I'm a 20-something female and have only played this game with other 20-somethings. I can't comment on the entertainment/education value of this game for younger children)

5Math Fun!Feb 06, 2011
By Laura
My mother just recently purchased this game from a store in Florida and brought it home with her. A lot of us kids were math majors in college and some english majors. We all have a lot of fun trying to put all the pieces together and work out the puzzle. The game also helps us keep our minds sharp because of all the adding. Its hours of fun because no one wants to stop playing!

I got this for Christmas and LOVE it. It is fun to play solo, but lots more fun with a group or pair. I encourage every family to get one of these games. Not much more to say, but did I mention it was fun?

5Homeschool Game WIN!Mar 26, 2011
By Susan
[...] I just want to say that this is a perfect homeschool game. It provides addition and multiplication practice, adds in some Sudoku-like puzzle problem solving, and it is FUN. Let me emphasize the FUN part ... we play lots of educational games, and some are more fun than others. This is fun for adults as well as children (as long as they have the requisite math background), so it is a win on many levels: mama likes it, daughter likes it, and it's a quality learning experience. Sumoku is definitely time and money well spent.

5Make learning math funMar 26, 2011
By NRNOODLE "Haus Frau"
This game was a blast. I had heard about it from another homeschool mom. There is 5 different ways to play this game you can play alone or with up to 8 people. We played this most recently for family game night and everyone got involved. So it is not just a learning game but a challenge for the whole family. It really helps to sharpen your addition, multiplication, and division skills. The pieces are nicely made. The interesting bag has ziploc inside to hold the pieces so they don't fall out when you open the bag. The zipper pull on the bag is made from one of the game pieces. Very nice touch. This game would also be great for a math teacher to keep in their desk for a great game to help their kids have fun while learning.
