3Fun and appropriate for youngsters, but needs more words.Jan 27, 2011
By porkch0p31
I am a big fan of Pictionary. As my nephews have gotten older, they expressed interest in playing Pictionary, which is of course, a little too hard for 7 or 8 year old boys. I purchased the Pictionary Jr for them and they love it. I think the words are age-appropriate and teaches kids to think outside the box. I love the hints too. The only gripe I have is the game does not have that many words with it. I think the stack is like a fourth of the regular game's word bank. If there were more words in the word bank, the game would get a higher rating. :)

4Fun, all-family game especially when used with your TVJan 05, 2011
By William W. Davis "famousdavis"
QUICK SUMMARY: Pictionary Junior is a simpler version of regular Pictionary that doesn't require much specialized knowledge or a grown-up's life experience to play the game. It's fun for the whole family, especially when you play with a drawing tablet connected to your TV. Too easy-to-guess answers, though, keep this from being a 5-star product.

Background: I bought this game just so my family could use our uDraw Studio - Game and Tablet, which is a drawing tablet for the Nintendo Wii gaming console. This way, we could all just sit in our family room and watch the "Picturist" (the person drawing) draw a picture that is displayed on our large screen TV set. This makes it a more relaxing, less crowding way to play the game. The awkward nature of drawing with an electronic tablet makes it a little more challenging to draw objects that would otherwise be very easy to draw. (Of course, this game comes with its own paper pad and pencils so you don't have to play it with an electronic drawing tablet and TV set). We've now played this game a few times, and it's been fun, although my eight-year-old struggles to read some of the words on the cards.

WHAT I LIKE:

- This a wholesome game suitable for the entire family to play all at once
- The game comes with 144 double-sided cards, enough for quite a few games without repeating the use of the cards
- It provides some laughter for us as we watch each other sketch (badly!)
- Sometimes we're stumped as to what the artist is drawing (so it's not too easy to guess every time)
- The cards with words on them have an "easy" and a "harder" set of words. We had adults and older children sketch words from the "harder" side, and younger kids drew from the "easy" side.
- You can start and finish an entire game within about an hour, which is about the most a young child will want to play any board game

WHAT I DO **NOT** LIKE:

- The game instructions, if followed, make it just too easy to guess the words sometimes. For instance, you're supposed to read the theme for each sketch card. If the card's theme is, "In the Bathroom", then when the game timer (a one-minute egg timer) is flipped over, people will just guess common objects in a bathroom (toilet, sink, bathtub, mirror, etc.), and many of these guesses will match to the words on the sketch card. You can easily have someone guess the correct answer without having the "Picturist" sketch anything!
- The game is contained in a box that is much too big for its contents. You could easily have all the game's contents contained in a box that's one-half the size of this box (the height dimension, in particular, is almost three inches when it needs to be only about one inch). Why is that a problem? In my small house, storing games is a challenge because of the limited shelf space we've got. I dislike any game that's got lots of unnecessary air space inside its storage box.

What could be BETTER:

- For younger children, it'd be nice to give them 30 seconds longer to draw, so it'd be nice if the game included two different timers: a 60-second timer and a 90-second timer.
- Drawing cards that have a theme like, "In the bathroom" shouldn't include any words that are too obvious choices like "toilet", "bathtub" and "sink." The theme should help you guess, but not make it too easy to guess the correct word.

Suggestions: For young kids who are beginning readers, have them sketch *any* word they can read on the card they select, not just the word that matches to the color of the game board where the team's playing piece is on. To increase game difficulty, don't read the theme of the card so "obvious" answers that could be guessed by knowing the theme are no longer obvious or easy.

CONCLUSION: This is a nice game to have in your arsenal of games that can be played by the whole family. If you've got a family member that is sensitive to feeling ridiculed or embarrassed (because he/she cannot draw very well), be aware that this may not be a good game for that family member. We've enjoyed playing this game, and I'm sure we'll continue playing it together as a family throughout the coming year. Recommended.

4very fun!Jan 06, 2011

Our son got this for Christmas. He's nine years old and I like that they have a "junior" version. We've played a few times and had a blast. I do wish they made something that holds the playing cards as they'll be easy to lose. Guess we'll use a rubber band. It's nice to play on a white board or chalkboard so you can easily erase and start over again quickly. Great for family fun nights! And for him to play with his friends too.

1crummy directions, unclear board, super frustratingJan 03, 2012
By dawn
something is very wrong with this game. the directions are in part confusing and in part wrong. it is unclear where one puts one's playing piece to start the game, and which square is the last. the directions say that the blue cards are easy and the green harder, but it seems to be the opposite. there is no explanation of what players should do if they land on a blank square. there is a description of "all play" squares, but no explanation of single team plays (i think the squares with one pencil). my husband and i were familiar enough with pictionary that we were able to figure out a fun enough game to play with our daughters, but what a disappointing christmas present. how can the manufacturer, whose business it is to make games, sell a game like this? do they not have proofreaders or people on whom they test new editions of games? it makes me angry to think that i spent money on this game, and will now have to go through the returns process. it could be fun, but wait a year or so -- maybe they will have fixed it by then.Pictionary Jr

5Great to foster young children's imaginations and understanding of languageJul 19, 2011
By Marc Schoenen
We purchased this game for our two children, aged 7 and 5, to play as a Family Game.

We are delighted and thrilled with the results so far! For our five-year old, it fosters an understanding of language. Even on the "easy" level, there are a number of words/concepts to draw that are challenging for a child about to enter Kindergarten. The five year old is still learning word recognition, and this is a great way to foster that in a fun environment.

Like most games, it has a loose competitive feel to it, in that here is a goal and a winner for the first team to get to that goal. But the majority of spaces along the board are communal drawings [rather than individual teams], so even with relative experience differentials, it can be fun for an entire family.

Much of childhood learning in schools is based upon mathematics and reading skills. Pictionary Jr. forces kids to not only be able to visually depict items, but to also learn to empathize with their partners. For example, if they are drawing a piano and the partner does not understand the drawing, they start to learn that drawing it from a different angle/perspective is one of the best ways to foster understanding in a non-verbal way.

This game fosters creativity, laughs, and even teaches children about anticipation. Since the subject theme of the drawing is known, as the children advance, they learn what types of guesses are more appropriate when the drawing commences. A fun game, well worth the money, and huge developmental aspects for our kids. Solid A.
